About the plant :

The Lemon tree was originally used as an ornamental in the gardens of pleasure in the Middle Ages, Lemon is gradually introduced into the medieval diet where it is used as acid bottoms for the seasoning of food in the same way as vinegar or orange juice. It is probable, however, that it has been used as a technique for preserving meat by acid since antiquity.
